These spring pictures were taken on the 26th of April and on the 1st of May in and around my beloved Taughannock Creek and one of its tributaries (right outside the village of Trumansburg, where I live). The streams seemed eager to show off the prodigious new growth they had spawned in the last few weeks, along with some of the usual stone beauties and weird monsters, a few humanoids among the latter.
I was almost desperate to receive their generous gift of new life spring carries and delivers. It has been a long and especially cruel winter, and, mind you, I am not referring to the weather as much as to the harrowing state of human affairs. I visit the streams in spring to find solace and clarity.
In its annual advent, spring cleans and renews everything, yet we humans seem incapable of doing the same with ourselves and the life perch we share. For the most part, we remain madly attached to our ever-multiplying ideological gangs, irrational worldly and post-mortem ambitions, and the hatred, violence, and even the grief they endlessly generate.
In moments of rare lucidity, one realizes that the human brain/mind —what we each think and feel— is at the root of this planetary mess. Each one of us is responsible for the general state of the species in so far as we remain identified with contradictory secular and religious ideologies and intent in overcoming our pervasive sense of inadequacy and insecurity by procuring greater power and wealth regardless of the long-lived cost that others might have to pay for our ephemeral success. If carefully attended to, such moments of clarity may unleash into the mind, and hence into human affairs, spring's enlivening power. The well-being and, ultimately, the very survival of humanity hinges on the emergence of a critical mass of individuals who are keenly aware of this entire situation and, therefore, not mindlessly beholden to competing groups and their rigidly prescribed and policed forms of thought and behavior.
Let us do whatever might be necessary to have this high degree of alertness come to us like the warmth of spring and its vivifying currents, a force strong enough to clear the soil of our minds of all that is predetermined, divisive, and, hence, prone to fear, cruelty, and sorrow. Now is the time to negate all presumed existential separation and thus surrender to the mystery of life holding all of us in a single, timeless embrace.
